Plan your race pace

The major trail-running weekend in Cabezón de la Sal already has a date for 2027: Saturday, May 22. The event brings together mountain-running options, including the 16th Marathon, whose published rules set an 8 a.m. start, a finish at the same location and a route through Cabezón de la Sal, Ruente and Mazcuerras. Entry for that distance costs between €45 and €50, depending on the registration period.

The Cantabrian event is known for its demanding terrain and changing conditions, but the available information needs to be separated by race. The official rules available here cover the 2027 marathon; distances of 110, 75 and 21 kilometers appear in third-party listings and should be checked against the organizer’s information before registering. That distinction matters: start times, prices and conditions may vary by event.

Date, town and marathon start

The 2027 edition will take place on May 22 in Cabezón de la Sal, Cantabria. For the 16th Marathon, the rules set the start at 8 a.m. and the final cutoff at 10 p.m. Both the start and finish will be on Avenida de Cantabria, opposite Mesón Paraíso, so the route begins and ends in town.

The route for that distance also passes through the municipalities of Ruente and Mazcuerras. According to the organizer, it follows paths and tracks in Saja-Besaya Natural Park; this is not an urban route or a fast road race. Runners must pay attention to the course markings and locate and follow them throughout the event.

Other websites list several running distances for the event, including 110 kilometers, 75 kilometers, a 40.4-kilometer marathon and a 21.2-kilometer short trail race. However, the official 2027 conditions available here cover the marathon. Before planning travel or choosing a distance, check that the organizer has published the relevant race details, rather than assuming every event starts at 8 a.m.

Distances and what is confirmed

The mountain-running program appeals to different runners, from those looking for a route close to a half marathon to experienced participants taking on long ultras. External listings describe four running distances: 21.2, 40.4, 75 and 110 kilometers, with advertised elevation gains of 844, 1,600, 3,350 and 5,600 meters, respectively. These figures help provide an overview, but they do not replace the official course guide or rules for each distance.

The marathon rules for 2027 set intermediate cutoffs at Campa Casa del Monte, at kilometer 18.86, by 2 p.m., and at Cerezo, at kilometer 29.5, by 7 p.m. The final cutoff is 10 p.m. These checkpoints are not mere administrative details: they determine whether runners can continue and appear in the results, making it important to manage effort from the beginning.

The organizer describes the marathon as a physical activity for leisure, tourism or culture, explicitly excluding a competitive purpose in its rules. At the same time, it uses electronic chip timing, has men’s and women’s categories, and awards a finisher’s medal to those who complete the course. The combination reflects the event’s distinctive character: a personal challenge within an organized event with rules, checkpoints and race services.

Registration, entry fees and cancellation policy

For the marathon, the published registration period opens on September 1, 2026, and closes on May 4, 2027, unless the organizer closes it earlier because of participant numbers. The first fee is €45 through December 31, 2026; it then rises to €50 through March 31, 2027, and remains €50 through May 4, without a T-shirt. A one-day license adds €5.

The rules set a minimum age of 18 by race day and require registration to be paid online by card. They do not allow runners to reserve a place and pay when collecting a race number. Registration is personal and non-transferable, although one participant may be replaced by another through April 30, 2027, for an additional €10.

The general rule is that fees are not refunded if a registered participant ultimately cannot take part. The exception is the cancellation guarantee, which costs an additional €10 and allows a full refund if the withdrawal is reported by April 30, 2027. From May 1 onward, there are no refunds, even in the case of injury, an accident or a change of plans. These dates and amounts apply to the regulated marathon; fees for other distances should be checked separately.

A mountain course shaped by its surroundings

The marathon combines tracks and trails in a landscape where the mountains are part of the challenge, not simply a backdrop. The rules place the course in the Saja-Besaya Natural Park area and warn that conditions may include heat, cold, rain or wind. That range makes gear a practical consideration: conditions at the start may differ from those in the final hours.

The organizer may alter the route if circumstances make it necessary and allows for cancellation in severe weather or force majeure, subject to approval by the race committee. The rules also state that runners must follow the markings and are responsible for locating them. On a woodland trail, a missed turn can cost time and energy, so knowing the published route and following instructions is a matter of safety as well as navigation.

The event crosses areas of natural value and prohibits littering outside designated areas. The rules allow disqualification for littering or damaging the route and provide bins within 100 meters of control stations. The reason is plain: during a long race, wrappers and cups can accumulate for hours. Protecting the terrain means every participant should carry waste to the designated collection points.

Cutoffs, safety and medical support

In the marathon, the maximum time to complete the course is 14 hours, from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. The organizer may withdraw runners who miss the cutoff times or show signs of a physical problem that could endanger their health, as well as anyone who breaks the rules. According to the regulations, a runner caught by the sweep vehicle is out of the race and must hand in their race number.

Timing is electronic and runners must pass through the start and all checkpoints on the route. The race number must be visible; failing to wear it may lead to exclusion. The organizer says it will provide medical staff, ambulances, mobile basic life support, a medical station at the finish, sweep vehicles, showers and physiotherapists. This is the event’s planned coverage, but it does not remove the need to assess one’s own fitness.

Participants must either hold a license from the Cantabrian Athletics Federation or buy the one-day license with insurance offered by the organizer. The rules state that these are the only forms of coverage accepted by the authorities. Each runner declares that they are physically fit and takes responsibility for taking part. The distance, elevation and exposure to changing weather make it particularly important to read the full conditions before confirming a place.

Race-number pickup and preparation for a long day

Marathon race-number pickup is scheduled at Parque Conde San Diego, on Avenida de Cantabria in Cabezón de la Sal. It will be available on Friday, May 21, 2027, from 4:30 p.m. to 10 p.m., and on race day, Saturday, from 6 a.m. to 7 a.m. The morning window is short and ends an hour before the start, so collecting the race pack on Friday reduces pre-race tasks.

To collect a race number, participants must show their ID and, if they have not purchased the organizer’s insurance, the federation license specified in the rules. The race pack is not mailed and must be collected during the stated hours. Another person may collect it with a photocopy of the participant’s ID, under the published conditions.

For a race that may continue into the evening, equipment needs to work for many hours of movement over changing terrain. The organizer says clothing and shoes should suit the distance and expected conditions, although the rules cited here do not set a mandatory clothing list. It makes sense to train in the chosen gear, check shoe fit and avoid trying important new items on race day. Lasting comfort often matters more than a flashy choice.

How to read the weather and choose gear

May in Cantabria can bring mild days as well as rain, wind or sudden changes; the marathon rules themselves mention those possibilities. No reliable weather forecast for May 2027 is available this far in advance. Historical climate averages shown on third-party websites are reference points, not a forecast for race day, and should not be treated as a guarantee of temperature or trail conditions.

A sensible approach is to check the forecast closer to the event and bring layers that can adapt, especially if spending many hours in the mountains. A light waterproof layer can help in rain or wind, while insulation becomes important when slowing down or as evening approaches. On muddy surfaces, shoe grip and stability matter more than appearance. Gear should be tested in training under conditions similar to those expected on the course.

Hydration and nutrition should also be tested beforehand, rather than relying on race day to discover what the stomach can tolerate. Needs differ between a 21-kilometer event and a 110-kilometer ultra, and aid stations may vary by distance. Since figures and services must be confirmed in each set of rules, study the official course guide and plan around its details instead of assuming every distance has the same support.

Cabezón de la Sal as the event’s meeting point

The event is centered on Cabezón de la Sal, with the marathon start and finish on Avenida de Cantabria, opposite Mesón Paraíso. Race-number pickup is at Parque Conde San Diego, also in town. This makes logistics easier for those staying locally, although demand for accommodation may rise as runners and supporters arrive for the weekend.

Travelers from farther away should remember that the race starts early and race-number pickup has set hours. Arriving the day before avoids a predawn journey and leaves time to find parking, collect the race pack and rest. Since the course passes through several municipalities, supporters must also follow access restrictions and organizer instructions rather than improvising routes along rural roads.

The event also offers a reason to look beyond the stopwatch. The Saja-Besaya trails connect the sporting effort with the woodland and rural landscape that shape the experience. That relationship with the area helps explain why the event combines sport with a visit to the region, but respect for the environment and local communities should extend to runners and supporters alike. The mountains remain a shared space during a race.

What to check before the start

The marathon date is set for May 22, 2027, but figures for the other distances, their start times and their fees need specific confirmation. Some available websites list four mountain races during the weekend; the organizer’s rules provided here detail the marathon. Checking the official website and current regulations can prevent confusion between distances and reveal any changes before payment.

It is also worth checking registration deadlines, insurance coverage, cancellation rules and race-number pickup hours. For the marathon, the 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. intermediate cutoffs shape race strategy just as much as the 10 p.m. final limit. Total distance alone is not enough: elevation, terrain and intermediate cutoffs better describe the real challenge.

The event retains the appeal of a long mountain challenge in western Cantabria, with options for different runners and a natural setting that calls for respect. For marathon participants, official details already make it possible to plan the date, start, fees and cutoffs. For the other distances, the relevant documentation is still essential: for an event like this, good planning starts by separating confirmed details from information still to be verified.
