The good news is that running in summer doesn’t have to turn into a bad experience. With a few sensible adjustments to the schedule, hydration, clothing and expectations, heat stops being an absolute enemy and becomes just another condition to manage. What matters is not beating it by force, but understanding how the body responds and adapting the effort with some intelligence.

Why the body gets tired sooner when the temperature rises

When running, a huge part of the energy the body produces is not turned into forward motion, but into heat. That thermal load increases even more when the environment is already hot and humidity makes sweat evaporation harder. The result is easy to notice: the skin turns red, breathing becomes heavier and the heart rate shoots up earlier than usual.

The problem is not just sweating more, but cooling down worse. In warmer months, the watch stops being the only referee. Forcing winter paces in hot conditions usually comes at a high price because the body is already busy cooling itself and has less room for high intensities. Slowing down by a few seconds per kilometer doesn’t mean going backwards; it often means training in a way that fits the context.

Distance also deserves a realistic look. A run comfortable in February can become an excessive load under harsh sun and humidity. Shortening total time or cutting the final stretch is not a concession but a way to preserve quality and avoid dragging out recovery.

Expectations are part of training, just like shoes. Those who accept that summer changes the rules run with less frustration and make smarter decisions. It’s not about resignation but precision: knowing what the day asks for, what the body can tolerate, and how much margin is left to sustain effort without overdoing it.

In extreme heat, pace stops being king. Holding the same pace as in mild weeks is usually a miscalculation. The best references are perceived effort, heart rate, and overall sensations rather than chasing winter target times.

Lowering ambition on intense sessions when heat waves hit is wise. Demanding intervals, aggressive pace changes or long runs in full sun multiply thermal stress. Sometimes the best adjustment is to change the type of effort rather than push harder.

Clothing matters more than it seems

Summer is not fought with heavy fabrics or clothes that trap heat. Light, breathable clothing in light colors helps make the run less stifling. Dark shades absorb more solar radiation and increase thermal sensation, while technical fabrics wick away sweat and reduce that damp feeling stuck to the skin.

A shirt that dries quickly avoids the wet-rag sensation that irritates and gets heavier every kilometer. A light cap or visor reduces direct sun exposure on the head and face, where the sun hits hardest during difficult hours.

Cotton and heat usually don’t go well together on long runs because cotton holds moisture and clings to the body. Technical garments ventilate better and keep a more stable feeling during effort.
